The Ohio School District Income Tax

What does it mean to you?

As if tax season isn’t daunting enough for most taxpayers, this year many Athens residents will be introduced to the newly imposed Athens City School District Income Tax.  Currently, Athens City School District is the only school district in Athens County with such a tax.

What it means
Those who are obligated to pay are taxed only on their earned income at the rate of 1%.

“Earned income” school districts
This is any school district whose voters have approved a school district income tax that applies only to earned income. This includes wages, self-employment earnings, and earnings from partnerships. The "earned income only" school district income tax excludes interest, dividends, capital gains, pensions, rental income, lottery winnings, and income earned by estates.

How to file
Form SD 100 is used to file; because Athens School District is an “earned-income only” school district, filers will have to use worksheet 6 (found in the SD 100 booklet) to complete Schedule B of the SD 100 in order to determine their earned income.

We can help!
If this seems too overwhelming, we can help. Consider taking advantage of our affordable and reliable tax preparation services by giving us a call at 597-2800 or contact Shawn at scutright@oucu.org or Cory at ccorrigan@oucu.org.
