International Students

OUCU offers a variety of savings and checking accounts, computer loans, student credit cards, and more.

Here are the most common questions we receive from International Students:

What is the difference between a credit union and a bank?

The biggest difference is that members own their credit unions. A $10 deposit into your OUCU savings account is your member “share” in the credit union.

While most banks send profits to shareholders, credit unions are not-for-profit cooperative financial institutions that return profits to members in the form of better rates, lower service charges and convenient services. Members also have a direct impact on how a credit union operates by voting for the volunteer board of directors.

Do you provide international wire services?

Yes. Many of our international students use this convenient service. There is no charge for incoming international wires and a $50 fee for outgoing wires. You can find additional information on our wire trsnsfers by clicking here, stopping in one of our branches, or giving us a call at 740.597.2800.

Do I need a Social Security Number to open an account?

No. All you need is your passport and a visa permitting you to study or work in the U.S.

Can I apply for a credit card?

Yes. If you are at least 21, you’ll need a Social Security Number and proof of income.

If you are under 21, and full time student, you’ll need a social security number and a qualified co-signer.

How can I access my account?

There are several ways to access your OUCU accounts.
  • log into home banking
  • visit either of our branches
  • make a call to our Call Center - 740.597.2800
  • talk to an online representative using Cat Chat
  • use any of our ATMs
  • visit one of our shared branching locations. To find one near you, visit www.cuservicecenter.com
Is my money safe at OUCU?

Yes. Your deposits are federally insured to at least $250,000 by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), an agency of the U.S. Government.

Do I have to close my account when I leave Ohio University?

No. Once you establish an account with us, you may remain a member and use our services for life. Even if you move abroad, you may access your account over the Internet …our international students do this every day!
